I hope that you all are well rested and having a good week thus far.
Thank you to Windfall Wine for sending me some of their amazing wines to taste and flavorful Mendola MCC.
As you all know, I am a huge wine lover and will always talk about wine and try new wines out.
How much do you know about the wine you buy at your local supermarket or wine store? For most, it boils down to price, variety, and availability – we buy it, we enjoy it, and that’s where it ends.
But with great wine there is a great story!
Nestled in the Agterkliphoogte Valley lies Windfall, a small boutique wine farm and one of South Africa’s best kept secrets. Windfall took its name from South African cricketing legend, Eddie Barlow, who noticed the mist cascading down the surrounding mountains of Robertson, or ‘The Valley of Wine and Roses’ as it come to be known.
The farm was first owned by Phillip Lourens and called Spesbona. Robert Alexander now owns the farm and has done much renovations and agricultural work alongside Jaco De Wet also Windfall’s Viticulturist. Many vineyards have been replanted, new varietals added, alongside apricots, lemons, olives and butternut. New dams have been built and old ones rebuilt to ensure maximum water supply to quench the thirst of the vines in this extreme climate.
Having started with only 3 wines, they can now proudly showcase a range of 9 wines, one MCC and their 7 year potstill brandy which is making a name for itself! This is all due to their remarkable winemaker Kobus van der Merwe and his magnificent team of hardworking and well accomplished cellar assistants, Riaan Fillipi and Micheal. Riaan was awarded the best cellar worker in 2015 and they could not be more proud of him.
Windfall Wine has sent me five of their top range wines. My top three wine selections from the range are as follows:
MENDOLA MCC 2015
100% Chardonay Brut, Blanc de Blanc – 2015. Windfall Mendola Blanc has dedicate citrus characteristics with peach, guava and citrus blossoms being prevalent on the nose, which follow through onto the palate with beautiful nutty flavours. The crisp and refreshing acidity make it a perfect accompaniment to many dishes.
GRENACHE ROSE 2018
Windfall’s Grenache Rose has strawberry and pomegranate on the palate with sweet-melon nuances that linger into a long finish. Enjoy this slightly sweet wine with friends and an assortment of different dishes. The perfect companion to any occasion.
SAUVIGNON BLANC 2018
Windfall’s Sauvignon Blanc hosts an array of mouthwatering tastes. Bracing acidity, lime and earthy flint notes are followed by tropical fruit flavours and finishes with a very delicate white oak taste. A true sensation for the nose and palate which does not disappoint. Best enjoyed with sushi, chicken of fish dishes, salads and creamy pasta.
THE BEAUTIFUL WINDFALL WINE VALLEY HAVE 5 SELF CATERING COTTAGES WHICH OVER LOOK THE VALLEY WITH A BACKDROP OF MAJESTIC MOUNTAINS.
Beautiful walks and MTB rides are easily accessible in the surrounds. There are a few cellars in the area which offer tastings and cellar tours. A hop and a skip from Roberston town as well as McGregor.
The units sleeps between 2 – 4 people.
Chenin and Sauvignon Blanc are suitable for couples sharing as they each sleep 2 people.
Barrel 41 is suitable for 2 couples and sleeps 4 adults.
